About the Species
It is, at this point within our community, common knowledge of the typical Canis dirus species, which is often used within different canine roleplaying communities. Canis dirus is a canine species that lived in the late Pleistocene era into the early Holocene era, which is actually quite recent on Earth's geological timescale.

Thus, Primus Canis dirus, otherwise known as "The First Dire Wolf", is a species created to be Canis dirus's long time predecessor. The first known traces of Primus Canis dirus can be observed at the end of the Mesozoic era, in the Cretaceous period. Although its own origins are unknown, this is to be the common ancestor of all proceeding canines. However, after the Mesozoic extinction (the one most know to have completely wiped out the dinosaurs), any known evidence of this species was utterly wiped out with the exception of single skull to tell its tale. As a result, most of the traits present on Primus Canis dirus have been genetically lost.

Primus Canis dirus is canine-like species that evolved to posses features that rivaled its long time enemy, Smilodon populator. Due to having a common fundamental niche as Smilodon populator, thus resulting in a smaller realized niche, it is common for outbreaks to continuously occur between both species.

Species Features and Characteristics
The various traits of our species are all defined by gender. You can visualize some of these traits as they resemble features relating to your present day lions. However, the rest of our traits are completely unique to our species.

Pelt Variations and Bioluminesence
The Primus Canis Dirus species hosts a variety of pelt variations, although a limited variety of colorations. This limited variety is due to the environment in which they roam; their pelts coloration have adapted to give them the colors most suited for camouflage and other traits best suited for survival.

Pelt Coloration
The pelt coloration that have evolved within these species are:
- White color schemes - These colors are best suited to withstand the wet season and barely assists with camouflage
- Grey/Black color schemes - These colors are bested suited to withstand the dry season and sort of assists with camouflage
- Brown color schemes - A happy medium between the white and black color schemes; very good with camouflage in certain areas
- Pale color schemes [sandy hues] - Decent camouflage in the day; vulnerable in the night
- Greenish-brown hues - Although unappealing to the eye, this pelt gives the best possible camouflage
- [Ford]Russet, no vibrant reds - Does not assist with camouflage, however, it is a desired sexual trait as it is appealing to the eye
- Silver-blue hues -Does not assist with camouflage, however, it is a desired sexual trait as it is appealing to the eye

Pelt Variation
The diversity in pelt variation is almost unlimited. See our genetics page for more information when designing a character.

Bioluminescence
The bioluminescence trait present on the fur was quickly adapted into the species after the transition of animals from water to land. The luminescence is seen as both a survival trait and sexual trait. In the survival sense, it keeps wandering beasts away at night. In the sexual sense, certain colors are more desired than others, as they are more appealing to the eye. The best way to visualize it are birds. Sexual selection, in which certain traits arise due to the preference of one sex, is very common in birds. Female birds choose the most bright and colorful males as it is more appealing, even though being colorful makes the males more susceptible to predation. In peacocks, females are very bland. They lack any coloration. The males, on the other hand, boast beautiful and long feathers that the females desire.

The species boasts two very successful color schemes for luminescence both of which can be found on the male and female: blue and yellow color schemes.

To decide what bioluminescence you get, a dice is rolled (by the Founder only)...
-
Rare - 10% (90-100)

Common - 60% (30 - 89)
-
Undesired - 30% (0-29)
